A Brief Introduction to Shanghai Society of Metals
The Shanghai Society of Metals was founded in April 1956. The Society is the nongovernmental academic organization which consists of iron and steel enterprises, universities and colleges, and research institutes in Shanghai area. The Society is led by Shanghai Association for Science and Technology and The Chinese Society for Metals, and relies on Baosteel Group Corporation. The 9th Board of Directors from 2006 to 2011 is composed of 65 members, and the president is Mr. Xu Lejiang, the Chairman of Baosteel Group Corporation.
There are 41 group members, including iron and steel enterprises and their associations, universities and colleges, and research institutes. The Society edits and publishes the transactions entitled “Shanghai Metals”. There are 16 professional subcommittees engaging in Ironmaking (including Ferroalloys and Sintering), Steelmaking and Continuous Casting, Metallurgical Materials, Metallurgical Equipment (including Casting), Plastic Working (including Mill Rolls), Refractories, Metallurgical Project and Technical Economics, Metallurgical Analysis and Testing, Informatization (including Metallurgical Automation); Energy resources and Environmental Protection, Chemical Industry and Carbon Materials, Powder Metallurgy, Heat Treatment, Semi-conductor Materials, Occupational Safety (including Fire-Fighting and Three Proofing), and Steel Structures. The Society has admitted about 4,000 individual members.
The aim of Shanghai Society of Metals is to unite and organize technical personnel in the area of metallurgy to face the modernization, the world and the future, to go though with the policy of “let a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend”, to link closely the needs of production and construction, to promote the flourishing and developing of science and technology in metallurgical industry, to popularize and spread the knowledge of metallurgical technology, to promote growing to maturity of technical personnel and combine the technology with economy to service for the metallurgical production and construction. Shanghai Society of Metals shall make great efforts and contribute its share for development of economy and acceleration of realization of modernizations of our Country.
Shanghai Society of Metals shall organize technical personnel to carry out the technical exchange and to offer important suggestion as regards to the important issues of science and technology in metallurgy.The Society shall hold international conferences and exhibitions, and invite the experts both at home and abroad to visit Shanghai and to engage technical exchange in order to enhance the professional skill and theoretical knowledge of the members of the society. Shanghai Society of Metals also undertakes the projects assigned by Shanghai local government and provide the investigation and the demonstration of the long-term program for Shanghai Economy Zone and metallurgical industry in shanghai. The Society makes manifold information studies and provides the research reports valuable in scientific and economic meaning for each director unit (usually a company, as the group member taking the position of the director in the society). Shanghai Society of Metals also organizes the exports to provide the consultation and technical services for different customers in industries, particularly for the small and medium size of enterprises. The Society fully utilizes and develops social resources, and takes advantages of lateral ties, in order to bring the Society to an important non-state unit of science and technology for development of metallurgical industry of our country. |
